Don’t do it Olof!
We discussed a similar thing just last week when ourselves and many of you agreed that we wouldn’t like to see Carlos Cuellar plying his trade for another side in the Premiership. Today those pesky people at the Daily Mail have released a story claiming that Everton are ready to pounce for a genuine Villa legend, Mr Olof Mellberg.
He’s one of my favourite ever Villans, and I know a lot of you feel the same way. He impressed in the European Championships, and even the more passionate of English Villa fans couldn’t bring themselves to say a bad word about the bearded one when he was busy scoring goals in the recent game (would have been interesting if it did finish 2-1 to Sweden though!). I still think he could do a decent job in the Premier League, and while I’d be happy for it to be at Villa, I’d HATE the thought of him wearing another teams colours. Here are a few lines from the piece:
‘Everton are lining up a swoop for former Aston Villa star Olof Mellberg.
The 34-year-old defender, who left Villa Park last season after seven years at the club, reminded everyone of his talent by scoring twice against England during Sweden’s 3-2 Euro 2012 defeat last week.
And the Toffees hope to pounce now that contract talks between Mellberg and his club, Olympiakos, have broken down.’
I’m hoping that this is nonsense, and the very fact they claim that he only left us last season (I wish!) is hopefully an indication that this story leans on the not true side of things. He’d represent a decent signing for someone, and I was impressed overall with his performances for Sweden. It just wouldn’t sit right to see him wearing another sides shirt, and while the player has got to make a living, hopefully he does it away from these shores!
He left us on such a high note (that shirt gesture remains one of the classiest things I’ve seen a player do in the Premier League for any club) and the only good thing were he to sign for Everton or another Premiership club was that we could give him the mother of all welcomes back at Villa Park. I still don’t want it to happen though!
It’s interesting to see how fans of other clubs (in this case Everton) view him, and I saw this comment on a Everton site:
‘I’m sure the media do this on purpose sometimes, linking Everton with absolute dross like Mellberg and Olsson’
Ouch. Still we all know what a legend he is, though of course we have memories of Mellberg when he was in his prime. I do like reading other fans views of linked players overall though, and we had a few Norwich fans comment on Ruddy (who we were linked with yesterday) and offer a more detailed analysis as they see the player week in and week out.
Anyway back to Olof, and hopefully from a purely selfish point of view he stays abroad. Wherever he ends up though, we wish him all the best. Keep growing that beard.
UTV.

Aston Villa News 24/7
Did you not notice that the article states that Mellberg left Villa Park last summer? He left for Juventus in 08/09. Surely the fact that they haven’t done their homework proves that they would just write anything? I rate Mellberg fairly highly, he is a very good centre half, but with Distin, Heitinga & Jagielka as our centre half’s I don’t see a place for him at Everton. We need to focus on other areas to strengthen the team. But as we all as football fan’s know, ignore the media…
Yeah wrote it here mate:
‘I’m hoping that this is nonsense, and the very fact they claim that he only left us last season (I wish!) is hopefully an indication that this story leans on the not true side of things.’
Sure it’s probably nonsense, we’ve been linked to many a random player ourselves. It’s a quiet time with the Euros on, probs another week or so of speculation before the moves hopefully start to actually happen!
i hope he doesn’t as well.
EFC fan
Everton have good cover at CB (unless they are selling)so they probably don’t need a 34 yr old. However to call him absolute dross is an insult and miles off the mark. Legend at Villa and still doing the business for Sweden
That Everton fan is a dick, ideas well above their station, Ollie in his prime was one of the top 3 Centre Halves Villa have had in the Prem era and would have done a brilliant job for Everton
Everton fans getting above there station……OMG have you heard yourself Villa fans? you still think you are a big premiership heavyweight, cracking season you had last year.
dick head
Dnt think we will be signing him he would not have got in r team wen he was at his best never mined now that he’s far past that
