Finally, we have another left back link
And the player is…….Blackburn Rovers’ Martin Olsson. It gets even better as well, as the story in the Mirror suggests that we’re going to offer Stephen Warnock in any deal, as well as a cheeky £2.5 million.
Now this to me would be an almost perfect bit of transfer dealing. To be able to get rid of a player on good wages, who not many Villans rate and another one of this ‘old guard’ and replace him with someone like Olsson would do me nicely.
Olsson is 24, he gets forward well and I think he’d be a perfect addition to our new look defence. I remember that great overhead/scissor kick he scored against us in that mad League Cup semi a few years ago, and if we were able to bring him in, I think he could do very well in a Paul Lambert system.
He actually made his debut for Blackburn as a replacement for Warnock, and for Warnock, he arguably played some of his best football of his career at Rovers. Would he go back? Hard to say, and the report states that he would rather stay in the Premiership, with Sunderland naturally linked. If he were to drop down to the Championship though, you’d have to imagine that Rovers would be one of the only sides he’d consider, and I expect them to do well this year. Not sure what their financial situation is like, but I seem to remember they’ve spent a bit this summer. Olsson doesn’t seem to want to play for them, and didn’t feature in their draw against Ipswich this past weekend.
Despite all the grief Warnock gets I think he could do a decent enough job for someone, and as I keep coming back to, if we could pull off a deal like this, it would be a great bit of business on our part in my opinion. Here is a bit of the report:
‘Paul Lambert is ready to pay £2.5million AND Stephen Warnock to lure Martin Olsson from Blackburn.
Aston Villa boss Lambert will rival Stoke in the battle to sign Sweden international left-back Olsson, who has handed in a transfer request at Ewood Park following Rovers’ relegation from the Premier League.
And Lambert is prepared to throw in Warnock – a Lancashire lad and a Blackburn player from 2007-09 – as part of the deal after telling the former England defender he has no future at Villa.’
We’ve been linked to young left backs at Ipswich and Middlesbrough this summer, and while people seem to rate them, I can’t say I know too much about them personally. Someone like Olsson, a proven Premiership performer would be more of a safe bet I feel, and is a player I really think could do well.
What do you all think of the link? Rate him? Or rather we look elsewhere?
As per, let us know.

Aston Villa News 24/7
Would love this to happen, LB of international pedigree and good going forward. Just hope it’s true
Me too mate, think it be a top top signing. Hopefully this one has some legs to it. He doesn’t want to play there, and hopefully Warnock be up for it because of the Blackburn link.
As a Rovers fan I doubt this will happen. Olsson does want to leave rovers however will not force a move. he also didnt play at weekend cz of injury. Rovers want 8m and thts never gonna hapoen. sorry villa fans
There’sno way B’Burn get 8m for Olsson, not now.
I personally would be very happy with Olsson at Villa Park but to be honest I think there is a better deal out there for us. I read earlier today that Kieran Richardson has wanted out of Sunderland for some time and given the recent links between Warnock and Sunderland, this is a deal that I believe could potentially happen.
For me, Richardon has all we need in a full back. Pace, power and he can definelty provide some service for Bent in the attacking third. He would be my first choice anyway.

Its Sunderland who is linkied to Olsson not us so dont get to excited.
Amazing news i have wanted him at #avfc since last summer he is on my fifa avfc squad
perfect for up hope this happens it will be the best deal we have done in this window no doubt @dpwindsor
i don’t think Blackburn would sell so cheap as he has still long contract and its not like they need the the money,so don’t get hopes up, its dead before it starts
