Gabby to Sunderland linked once again
It’s the link that keeps on cropping up, and once again at this time on a Saturday night, the Mirror have posted the obligatory Gabby to Sunderland story. In an article comprising all of nine lines, it’s the usual stuff made that little bit easier because MON is the manager.
Here are a few little snippets from it:
Sunderland’s manager will bid £6m for the 25-year-old former England ace if new Villa boss Paul Lambert goes ahead with plans to buy Grant Holt as his preferred partner for Darren Bent.
O’Neill was the boss who helped Agbonlahor’s Premier League career, blossom, leaving him out only once in four seasons in charge.
But his career has stalled since O’Neill left, and he finished last season with a miserable run of 22 games without a goal.
Firstly let’s remember that Lambert has been in the job for less than a day, so I doubt if he’s arranging transfers already! Still, it’s an interesting one with Gabby, and I’ve seen plenty of people thinking we should cut our losses with him. There are also those who have plenty of love for the player, and want him to be a Villan for life. I’m not sure where I lie personally, but I do think that this season coming up is arguably his biggest in a Villa shirt, providing he’s not sold to Sunderland of course. He did struggle at times last season, but saying that so did most of the team. I was hoping the captaincy might do something for him, but sadly not.
I’ve always viewed him as a striker, and despite having the pace to cope on the wing and being surprisingly adept at crossing I’d still much rather him up top. If Holt does make the move, or we go for another more physical striker then I view a quartet of Holt (or someone similar), Bent, Gabby and Weimann as a perfect mix of styles for the Premiership. I’m not sure £6 million is enough either for a player who has proven he can produce in the top flight, especially when we were linked with Jordan Rhodes of league one (now the Championship) for £8 million and Southampton have just bid a similar amount for Jay Rodriguez.
What are your thoughts on the matter? Do you see a big future for Gabby at Villa, or would you sell him at the right price?
UTV.

Aston Villa News 24/7
Think Gabby should be given a chance to see if PL can once again bring the best out in him.
please let this be true, no offence but he is just rubbish he makes heskey look good, if we cn get rid it will be good, if we can get PAID even better, loads of promise as a teen, done snaff all in the prem to deserve the hype, bye gabriel….sadly doubt it tho
I think Gabby has gone backwards since he put on ‘bulk’ a few years ago, saw him on AVTV recently when he scored his hat trick against Man City, more agile. One thing for certain Lambert won’t put up with a 22 match goal-less spell from a forward, there will be a few players at Villa who I’m sure lambert will move on.
Good point mate, he does seem to have regressed slightly since then. His electric pace was what made him such a danger, and even though he’s still very quick, he seems to have lost a step. Agree with regards to Lambert as well. It will be very interesting to see what he does with Gabby.
Gabby has had many years to produce. He has no touch and no football brain.
This for me is not quality. Weiman has shown us that he is sharp and skilful and these are the players we need to push The club forward. never thought I would say this but goodbye gabby.
Gabby has stalled but as with any new Manager, I would want to look at what he CAN do and make my own mind up. Not all players play well for the right manager (Some need a slap, some like a cuddle dare I say it). If Gabby is looking for this move then his time is up and I’d let him go as his passion is not with the club. Some players at Villa have gotten rather toooo comfy.
The most important thing as fans is to give the new manager a chance and don’t start slating him after only a few games. Patience is the key else we’ll drive another one away. I think Lambert will earn the respect….. over time.
That’s one of the things I’m most looking forward to with Lambert, someone to come in and sort out the players who look like they don’t care (not saying Gabby but others) and if they don’t sort things out then moving them on. We saw it far too often last year, and I think it was the disaster at Tottenham away when it was only Herd and a few others who actually looked like they gave a damn about Villa.
I imagine/hope Lambert will hopefully be given a proper chance. As mentioned already he is under very little pressure really given the disaster of last season. If he gets us playing decent football and we win more than 7 games he’s a hero after McLeish.
Gabby has struggled, it’s fair to say. But if anyone can get him firing again it’s Lambert. I don’t think we even should be looking at Holt. Gabby and DB could be the perfect partnership. He just needs a coach that can help him develop again.
Gabby can do it. I find it incredible that the one constant, the one player who has total loyalty for the club and its fans is slagged off by so many.
Last season was awful for everyone at Villa Park and Gabby felt it more than most.
If PL gets him playing and enjoying his football again and he bangs in a few early goals everyone will be off his bac.
I also want to see Nathan Delfouneso given an opportunity. Whenever he has been brought into the side he’s scored – other than under Mcloser.
Last season he played against Bolton in the League Cup and spent he whole game being screamed at by McLoser and his hopeless sidekick Grant.
The only other chance he got was away at Stoke where, admittedly, he missed a bit of a sitter.
I really think he’s a talented lad and needs a run as we haven’t seen the best of him by a million miles.
The Fonz is an interesting one as well. I hardly mention him these days because he seems to have fallen so far back. He’s never been given a proper chance, which is a shame because I think he has the talent.
I remember watching him for England under 21′s a couple of seasons ago and he really impressed. Scored a great goal and put in a top strikers performance. My big worry is that he’s hardly impressed when out on loan either, and I’m not sure if he’ll ever be given a run of games at the Villa. Saying that I wouldn’t be surprised if we let him go, and he was doing the biz in a year or so.
Apologies for another MON carp but I think Gabby was overplayed through injuries and fatigue by MON and has never been properly sorted out since. You’ve only got to see what happened to speed merchant Michael Owen once injury sets in.
You look at the goals Gabby has scored against the shit and that alone makes him a legend, but last season ironically after the Norwich game he was woeful, keep him one more season, why sell to that turncoat anyway.
Gabby really frustrates me.I think he s been worked out by the opposition.
They know he s not a fox in the box and all they have to do is stop him getting a run in behind them and he s farked.
Runs in straight lines all the time and to me just doesnt have that strikers instinct to be able to be there in the right place at the right time
