Jean Makoun not listed as squad numbers announced
The squad numbers have been released, and while there are a few interesting numbers, the one thing that stood out for me is that Jean Makoun has not been listed. Here are the numbers in full for those who haven’t seen them:
1 Shay Given
2 Alan Hutton
3 Stephen Warnock
4 Ron Vlaar
5 Richard Dunne
6 Ciaran Clark
7 Stephen Ireland
8 Karim El Ahmadi
9 Darren Bent
10 Charles N’Zogbia
11 Gabby Agbonlahor
12 Marc Albrighton
14 Brett Holman
16 Fabian Delph
19 Stan Petrov
22 Brad Guzan
23 Nathan Delfouneso
25 Barry Bannan
26 Andreas Weimann
29 Enda Stevens
30 Eric Lichaj
31 Chris Herd
32 Nathan Baker
33 Andy Marshall
34 Matthew Lowton
35 Daniel Johnson
38 Gary Gardner
39 Benjamin Siegrist
40 Samir Carruthers
We haven’t heard much from Villa at all on the whole Makoun subject, and while a few reports have come out saying that he might be sold, the lack of news has frustrated many. There have also been mentions that he is struggling to get a work permit because he failed an English test. This to me is just staggering, and surely there are a number of other players who struggle to speak the language (Carlos Tevez springs to mind)?
I’d be pretty annoyed if he were to leave. He’s never been given a proper chance, McLeish got it horribly wrong with him (much like he did by not signing Michael Bradley) and you get the feeling he’d fit right in with this new passing approach Lambert looks to be adopting. Hopefully we hear more on the subject soon, and I hope he’s gets his chance.
A few other noticeable numbers and I’m delighted to see Clark given the number 6 shirt. Perhaps this suggests as we’ve talked about that he’ll be a lot more involved this season. El Ahmadi has been given the number 8 shirt, so you’d expect him to be a big part of our midfield this season. Lowton has requested the 34 shirt, and maybe the number 2 shirt will be vacant soon should Hutton move on.
Most importantly Stan has his familiar number 19 shirt, and once again we wish our captain well.
UTV.
EDIT: As ‘Astonmilan’ in the comments pointed out, Makoun’s number 17 shirt has been left open, so hopefully if things can get sorted out, he’ll be wearing that number once again.

He was 17 before anyway, so maybe if he gets sorted out with a permit he will be that number again. Sad to think he is missing valuable pre season training.
Yeah good point mate, will edit that in. Like you say it’s a shame, because he’ll be playing catch up even if things do work out.
i am very happy with everything thats happened this summer so far but let down at the lack of information on makoun.he s a great player and i would love to see him play alongside el ahmadi.thats a great point about tevez by the way if thats the case but it would be nice to learn something about makouns future.COME ON THE VILLA.
When I watched him and that was most of his playing time, he regularly found the opposition with his passing, was caught out of position, tackled like Hutton at his worst and got himself sent off, is this great?
Granted save for the United game he struggled at times. That’s why I think we went horribly wrong with him last season, by shipping him off to Greece. As mentioned above we really could have done with him having a full preseason with us. As it is it’s looking more likely that his Villa career might be a pretty short one.
Jean is now listed as 17 on Villas official site: http://mobile.avfc.co.uk/default.aspx?s=news-display&aid=2868101
Thanks for sharing mate. Interesting how they’ve updated it! They mentioned it in the live text for the game and said it’s a work permit issue. Hopefully we hear more soon.
