John Carew is worried for the Villa

After we made it through to the quarter finals of the League Cup in typical Villa fashion, a few tweets begin to surface from ex Villa striker/cult hero John Carew. Here are the two tweets for you, for those who may not have seen them:

There are many who will argue that he’s absolutely right, for there’s no doubting it’s been a tough start to the season. I’m not going to start doom-mongering like other sites sometimes tend too, because it’s clear to most that Lambert inherited a side that has been on a downward spiral for a good few years.

I think it’s clear that new additions will be needed in January, because even though we pointed out in a recent article that it’s hard to criticise the majority of Lambert’s signings individually, many (myself included) feel that we might need help.

It is the second tweet from Carew that is pretty much spot on. I don’t think that the strikers are the issue, despite the lack of goals away from the league cup. We have a group up top who all offer different things, and even though things aren’t looking good for Bent, others have shown they can be capable.

Central midfield is a major concern, and that would be the first place I’d target come January. We have numbers in the middle, but too many of them flatten to deceive, and we’re crying out for a couple of players who have been there and done it in the Premiership. Lambert might realise that now, and I really think it could make a massive difference to how we fare this season.

Anyway back to some positives, and it was nice to see us progress this evening, despite the usual Villa drama. Benteke kept up his good run in front of goal, and as per, it will be interesting to see which starting eleven Lambert opts to start with against Sunderland and MON on the weekend.
