Moves are being made
It seems Lambert and Villa aren’t messing around, and after our post earlier we were linked with around 877 players. The main players linked seem to be Belgium striker Benteke and Charlton midfielder Dale Stephens, with more tenuous links to Gouffran and Sagbo.
The links with seemingly more legs are the first two mentioned, and while any players at this stage would be welcomed, I still believe we need someone with Premiership experience to come in. Benteke is being linked in a whole host of places, and certainly is the kind of striker we need. At 6ft 3 and built like the proverbial, he offers us something different. I’ve mentioned it a number of times, but Lambert had had clear success with a big physical striker, and Benteke comes pretty highly rated.
He’s only 21, had a better than one in two goals per game record last season in Belgium for Genk and could work very well alongside Bent. Of course we need to actually supply our strikers, and that’s still a big worry for me but we need bodies, and anyone brought in now would be welcome. We scored 37 in 38 last season, 1 in 2 so far this campaign, so it’s a definite concern. Any one who can add to that area should be viewed as a good addition, and Benteke looks to have something about him.
On to Stephens, and I can’t pretend to know anything about him. Good ol’ Wikipedia says he’s a 6ft 1 midfielder, and is 22 years old. He seems more of an attacking player than the defensive midfielder I and many others think we need, but as just mentioned we need bodies. I still think we need more width, but it seems Lambert seems to think a narrow midfield is best suited for us. Hopefully he finds the combination to start creating more clear cut chances, and hopefully we still see a few more new faces.
I wouldn’t be opposed to a few loans if needs be, with someone like Huddlestone being ideal. It’s clear though that Villa and Lambert realise we need new faces, and fast. It be nice to bring them in asap, and give them a few days together before a tough game against Newcastle.
Guess we’ll find out soon enough.
