Naughton the latest link, do we need him?
Kyle Naughton was hotly linked with us earlier on this summer, and now links have resurfaced regarding the Tottenham full back. Lambert of course is no stranger to the player, having had him on loan at Norwich last season, where by most accounts he did rather well.
I like the idea of Naughton, and I think he has the talent to be one of the top full backs in the league. He was the higher regarded player when he and Villa old boy Kyle Walker made the move from Sheffield United, but has found chances at Tottenham limited, and now finds himself down the pecking order. After the signing of Lowton though, it seems a bit of a strange one.
Of course Naughton has the ability to play in a number of positions, as does Lowton actually, and as we’ve mentioned a number of times, the more quality players we can add to the squad the better. If he were to come in, then it be very interesting to see who played where, and how they coped. Maybe Lambert sees him as the answer to our left back worries, but personally speaking, I like to see players line up in their preferred positions. We saw with the Hutton at right midfield debacle, that sometimes, it can end in tears. A number of sources have mentioned the link, and here is a little excerpt from the goal.com report:
‘Villa made enquiries for Naughton at the start of the summer as new manager Paul Lambert looks to re-unite with the 23-year-old following his season-long loan spell at Norwich last term.
The Midlands outfit were priced out of a move for the full-back at that time but now want to re-open talks over a deal for the former Sheffield United man.
Naughton would cost around £5 million and Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas is ready to listen to offers as he streamlines the Londoners’ squad.’
If he were to come in then great, he’s another young player who can be a big part of any Villa team going forward. At the moment though I just don’t see it. We have Lowton, Lichaj and Hutton (who’s still hanging around) at RB, so unless one of them switches to LB, then maybe this is a no-go.
I think we have a few key areas to fill, and for me they’re left-back, centre midfield, winger and striker. As good as Naughton is and can be, he doesn’t fill any of these roles. Of course whatever Lambert decides is more than alright for me, as I’m thinking he might know a few more things about what Villa need than this humble blogger. Still, it be an interesting one, and it’s one of those where I wouldn’t mind either way.
UTV.

Aston Villa News 24/7
Would be a good addition for 5m, can play LB so why not
I doubt he is available for transfer. Spurs only have walker at right back and don’t have cover for left back either. He can play both so I think he will be retained.
AVB said that Naughton isn’t part of his plans. He said he’s free to go.
Considering Lambert had Naughton last year on loan I’d assume he’d have an idea of how well Naughton can play left back. I’m fairly certain Lichaj can play left back as well, I’m not sure about Lowton. Having three young promising outside backs that can play either side sounds good to me.
We have adam smith, who has played for England U21s and was on loan at MKD last season, to cover at right back should naughton go. Smith is a fantastic player. Naughton might turnout to be class in the future, good luck to the lad, but I’m not overly worried if we lose him and he’s certainly not the only cover we have at right back. When I was a kid villa were a power to be reckoned with, you’re now a midtable also ran who can’t fill their stadium on match days. Very sad.
Stoney, When I was a kid Spurs were an nothing club, nowt has changed.
Naughton, phah I never want to deal with Spurs for any players after buying the rubbish that Hutton is. And before you gob off Stoney etc we paid 3-4m you paid 9m!
haha
I’m not the one ‘gobbing off’ Sean. Just stating facts. You on the other hand are just being abusive, or to use words you can understand… Gobbing off. Your fans have voted with their arses. They don’t fill the villa. Your stadium was nearly half empty for numerous games last season. One of my old college mates is a season ticket holder at villa, has been for years. He says he’s never been so bereft of hope. Deal in facts Sean. Don’t just shoot your mouth off. As for sours being a nothing team when you were a kid you must be 140 years old. We’ve won more domestic and European trophies than aston villa, so if, in your opinion that makes us nothing, I wonder what that makes villa. Think before you type. Your silence will be an acknowledgement of your ignorance, another comment though, unless humble, will only confirm your undoubted lack of reasoned thought and even the most basic intellect.
.
Stoney why the hell are you on a villa forum bad mouthing the fans in the first place?
Spurs are a buying club, always have been always will be, you criticise teams like Chelsea & Man City for buying glory but when you take a look through your squad you have..what…? one player you produced from the youth team and its Danny Rose.. your best prospect over recent years has been Danny Rose…. HAHAAA DANNY FREAKING ROSE?! I swear to God if we are linked with him again I will cry… I still remember how much he was raved about by desperate Spurs fans hoping that they had the ‘next best thing’ when he scored that sh!t goal against Arsenal.. ’40 yard screamer…. that went straight through Almunia’s hands’. You look down on the teams above you because ‘they have brought their success’ when you have spent just as much.. MORE than Arsenal in fact.. and they still embarrass you EVERY season!
I personally can’t wait for this season when Spurs yet again show they are a ‘nearly’ team with absolutely no bottle when it actually matters… ‘nearly’ got into the Champions League again last season didn’t you?
Get off the Villa forum you tool, no one wants to hear about another p!ssing London club and its cocky fan base that thinks the whole country loves them… time for the Brummies to storm the league
Hahaaaa sorry for the rant Mr Moderator
No need to apologise, that was awesome
