Petrov vs Hitzlsperger

It’s a relatively slow news day in the Villa world. So after captain fantastic Stiliyan Petrov scored another screamer in our 2-2 draw at Sunderland on the weekend, it got us here at UTV thinking about another midfielder who produced many a similar wonder strike, Thomas Hitzlsperger.

In 99 games at the Villa, everyone’s favourite German/Brummie Hitzlsperger scored 8 goals. With his wonder strike at Sunderland, Petrov now has 7. Now both of have one thing in common, namely that they rarely score rubbish goals. Here at the Villa, it seems to me we don’t score enough ‘wonder goals’ and almost every goal scored by the aforementioned duo, would be up there with the better Villa goals of recent history.

So the question/questions we have for the Villa faithful today is as follows. From their goals scored in the Claret and Blue, which of these two has scored the better goal, and who has the better collection of goals?

After spending time ‘researching’ we have come to the following conclusion. Petrov wins the battle for the best goal, with his wonder strike at Derby in our famous 6-0 victory a few years ago. As regular visitors to our Facebook page will know, I’m quite the fan of this goal and I maintain that if a player from a more ‘fashionable’ club had scored the goal, we’d still be hearing about it now. 45 yards out, top corner, weaker foot…..to quote a well used phrase, ‘Unbelievable tekkers’ Stan.

For the best set of goals, and no this isn’t us being diplomatic, we’re going to award it to Hitzlsperger. Way back when, Der Hammer was one of my favourite players, and the quality of his goals was something to behold. For me there are two that stick out, the volley against Bolton that won us the game, and the effort against the Blues that I think would still be travelling if it wasn’t for the net.
