Two games in, and already facing the biggest week of our season
It’s fair to say that the start of the season hasn’t gone as well as we’d hoped. Two games, two defeats and with a squad that is in desperate need of reinforcements, the next week (or the time up until the transfer window closes at least) will arguably be the most important of our season.
Things are not looking good. For all the nice passing at West Ham, the lack of any cutting edge was evident with our star striker receiving the ball probably fewer times than the words in this sentence. Against Everton, and in what many were hoping would be a triumphant first home game for Lambert, we were diabolical, and lucky to come out just losing 3-1. We’re having to play a mish mash of a team, with a number of players arguably not good enough to be starting every game at this stage of their careers.
We need new players, it’s as simple as that. I think we need at least 3 or 4, but the suggestion is that we might only see 2 players before the window closes. That’ll be welcome, and hopefully Lambert gets them in and they can make an immediate impact. At this point I think we need proven Premiership players as well. As handy as El Ahmadi and a few of the other new signings look, we need to add experience, and players with some premier-league know how. Some youngsters we’ve been linked with look good, but it be nice to add them along with more experienced players.
We have to see some new faces, it’s as simple as that. People with closer links to the club than those stupid ‘ITK’ accounts seem to suggest the next week will be busy, and hopefully it is. Lerner has to know that Lambert needs more players, if not it’s a genuine worry that we might struggle big time this season.
I’m also curious to see what happens with players like Hutton and Warnock. I can’t imagine there is a big market for the pair of them, and if no-one comes in, will they play a part? As hated as they are by the majority of the Villa faithful, surely they can add something to what is a small and inexperienced squad. Plus I’d rather even have them on the bench than collecting forty odd thousand a week and banished to the reserves.
Make no mistake this is a huge week, and will go a long way to determining how we do this season. Of course this Lambert revolution will take a while, but we really need to give him the best platform to build on.
UTV.

Aston Villa News 24/7
I agree
If the correct players are not purchased this week I believe Villa will go down BUT at least it will never be as bad as when McDuff was in charge.
Also Hurtton for all his faults was at the back end of last season playing better, he woulsd add steel to the defence.
Indeed, this week will go a long way to determining the future of Aston Villa Football Club for years and years to come. I hope Lerner understands.
Not As bad as when McDuff was in charge???!!!!!!!!! Were you not there on Saturday that was worse, good players make good managers so with that squad no manager has a chance of success at villa, i think we have to be favourites to finish in the bottom three this season, and if one more person says we have good young players i will start crying they are all championship at best.
I agree with “amazed” honestly. McLeish was having a right laugh somewhere given the ineptitude Villa showed at home. That display was downright pitiful, and I can honestly say I enjoyed watching many of our matches last year more than that crap.
For me, the problem is Lambert. I’ve not been impressed with his tactics, his purchases (if the transfer budget really was only 7-8million, why spend half of that on an unproven League One back and expect him to make the jump?!?), his team selection, or his understanding of the club at any level. Herd on the right? Bannan for Ireland? Continued belief in N’Zogbia?
It’s utter crap. He’s been found wanting for what he is–a gifted League One, Championship level manager who caught lightning in a bottle in Norwich. At Villa, he has performed at a level many here would have hung bedsheets about McLeish for, and I don’t think he deserves any more free pass than what McLeish was given.
Get him out Randy. And while you’re at it, remove yourself, too. 3 straight poor manager appointments. 3 strikes. You’re out, hoss.
Oh, and RIP to the “We have one of the best academies in Europe” bullsh…
Brian, you make Villa fans look bad.. it’s only been 2 fucking games!
Let’s be honest did we need new full backs…..Hutton warnock struggled due to wank midfielders. We need wingers big time. Anyone noticed what oneil has done again at Sunderland. Signed big centre forward and has his two wingers. It works. We’re too narrow, nzog, Ireland I have had enough.
