Villa on verge of signing lower league gem?

I remarked earlier how it’s all gone a little quiet with our first team being on tour. With the team close to returning home though, the links have begun to heat up again, and tonight we have one that has come a bit out of nowhere, but seems a bit more concrete than others that have been reported.

On both the Mirror and Sky Sports websites, it has been reported that young Ipswich left back Aaron Cresswell might be the next man in to join the Lambert revolution. Here is an extract from the Mirror piece:

‘Aston Villa are ready to sign Ipswich’s highly-rated left-back Aaron Cresswell in a surprise £3.5million raid.

New Villa boss Paul Lambert hopes to push through the move within 24 hours and bring Cresswell to the top flight just a year after the Tractor Boys plucked him away from League One football with Tranmere.

Cresswell, 22, impressed with his cultured left foot and cool displays for Ipswich last season while Lambert was in charge at their neighbours and arch-rivals Norwich.’

Left back is one of the positions I believe we need to strengthen, and with Warnock being linked away quite heavily, we could be soon quite thin in that area. I don’t know much about the player, but I have no problem with looking in the lower leagues. There is plenty of talent about, and Lambert has shown previously that he can find hidden gems.

He seems quite highly rated, and like Lowton on the other side, I love the idea of bringing in these young players with plenty of upside and throwing them in. One Villan on twitter who sees a bit of Ipswich rates the player, and informs me he was named Ipswich player of the year last season.

The language used in both the Mirror and Sky pieces is quite definitive, so maybe the move is quite close to being completed. I also recall similar language being used in a report linking us to Danny Simpson, and that’s all gone crazy quiet, so we’ll soon see.

I’d much rather us spend a modest (relatively speaking!) amount on a player like this, than overpay for an average Premiership player. We need a well rounded squad and we need quality. If Cresswell is indeed the next player in, then lets hope he continues his impressive start to his career.

UTV.
