We need a striker, just who is the question
We’ve bought well this offseason, and performances by and large have been very pleasing (save for the Forest game). One thing that is certainly noticeable to me is that we’re crying out for another striker, and I think this is a position of priority going into the new season.
In our friendlies so far we’ve scored 7 goals in 5 games. Not too bad, and certainly not as dire as last season, but considering the standard of opposition it could be viewed as a cause for concern. We’ve played some great football, we look good in possession and players actually want the ball, a marked improvement on the McLeish reign.
As we saw under Eck though, at times we struggle to find a cutting edge, and against Forest (ignoring the two disallowed goals) we didn’t really create many clear cut chances. We scored a screamer through Bannan, but this came via a set piece. We’ve also scored a few times from corners, which of course is a very positive sign after last year, but the lack of goals from open play is a bit of a worry.
Bent will start every game when fit, and while I rate Weimann extremely highly, perhaps it’s asking too much for him to be starting week in and week out. Gabby has struggled the past few seasons, and a record of 8 goals in 62 games is a worry, regardless of position, form, injuries etc. The Fonz flatters to deceive, sometimes looking great, and at others looking like the Premiership is too big a stage for him.
Stuart James at the Guardian has just produced an excellent season review on us (Season Review) and we had a little twitter exchange on what we think we’re missing:
UTV: ‘Good read mate. Bang on as well, especially with regards to a need for a new striker. As you say, more of a step than a leap!’
SJ: ‘cheers. Who would you like that striker to be? (Realistic suggestions only!)’
UTV: ‘I think we’re crying out for a more physical type of striker. Lambert has had success with this type before. Lukaku on loan?’
SJ: ‘agreed. As a purely short term option, I wonder how Holt would have done alongside Bent if he’d left Norwich.’
UTV: ‘Think he would have done a good job. I want someone of the ilk of Holt, just wasn’t keen on GH due to the fee/no resale etc.’
As you can probably tell from the exchange above, I think we’re in need of a physical striker, how about you people though? Lukaku would be ideal for me, he’s been linked with Fulham, and has said he’ll only go on loan to a side in the Premiership so why not? Some hate loans, and while we’ve been burned before, we’re never realistically going to sign someone like Lukaku, so I’d be happy taking him for a year or two.
Lambert has had success with a ‘bigger’ type of striker, we could desperately do with another imposing body in the side, so for me that would be ideal.
Anyone have any other suggestions, or types of striker they would like to see at Villa Park? As per would love to hear from you.

Thanks for the insight!
It was in response to an incorrect spelling which has now been corrected.
I know, I was thanking you. Any idea on strikers? Or are you all about the spelling?
Having watched a fair bit of Dutch football I like the look of Guidetti but not sure we could get him, especially if Dzeko leaves due to lack of first team football. Maybe a punt on Rhodes, Sinclair or as a real left-field pick Vaclav Kadlec from Sparta Prague? Lots of experience for a 19 year old and although he hasn’t scored that many goals as yet he seems to always hit the target which is encouraging.
Big striker would be a modern day version of John Carew. Realistically I’m not sure who is available, Sturidge or odewinge are gettable with good offers respectively, what they both worth?
No loans, I hate them and they should be outlawed. If we have a striker banging them in I want him for keeps! Hard to think of realistic names, maybe Hoarau from PSG? We’ve been linked with him before, he’s a big man, and after recent signings he’s been relegated to the bench and might want to get away. Problem is, any decent striker is going to cost money (even on loan), so I’d be more than happy for Paul Lambert to go out and bring in an unknown. To be honest I’d never heard of Cisse before he joined Newcastle.
I also think guidetti would be a great option if we could get him in on loan! I can’t see the guy getting over 12-15 goals! If he could achieve such a target and bent had the season we all wan from him and hit close to 20 goals we could very well end up right up the table! I’m sure if guidetti performed to the level mentioned above I’d say city would happily let him go for about 12mil which if we were to get a top 8 spot and have any ambition of kicking on is a very affordable price for a decent striker!
Here’s to hoping!
Defoe would be my choice. Bent & Defoe (Little & Large)In my opinion Defoe is crying out for 1st team football something which he has sadly lacked @ Spurs.
Experienced, proven Premier goalscorer given a run in the team.
Alternatively Andy Carroll if he would come to us, if we could afford the transfer and if we can give him the salary!! Lot of ifs there but we should give it a try.
Andy carroll would be my 1st choice, Berbatov,Defoe,Santa Cruz,Kenwyn Jones are all available for cheep signing on fee’s. Shame we couldnt get Holt but knowing Pl he will pluck someone from the championship who we havent thought about !
Don’t need a striker – we have two England strikers who both play better as sole strikers – we need another creative option/wide player for the three behind to add in to the Holman – Ireland – NZogbia mix. We only really have Carruthers and Albie as back up/options. If we can get the service right Bent will score for fun and Gabby is decent back up/cover/sub option but we need a midfielder that can create score and play with SI.
Strikers: I like the idea of Lukaku too, but how about Klaas-Jan Huntelaar; big price tag but might really thrive in the Premiership. And Lambert loves the Dutch. Or Loic Remy (Lyon).
Some top suggestions people. Asked the same question on our Facebook page, and Guidetti has come up a lot, as has Defoe actually.
For me I wouldn’t mind Defoe, though might prefer to look at other options. Probably cost a bit, big wages, little resale value, but he sure knows where the goal is and is experienced in the Premiership.
As people are alluding too, it may well be a relative unknown. That will suit me fine though if Lambert believes in him. I didn’t know much about any of his other signings, and they look pretty good.
Keep thinking he’ll go for a bigger player. Had real success with Norwich using that kind of player, and as mentioned it be nice to add some physicality and nastiness to our side.

Kenwyne Jones would give more options aerial wise, but i cant see us getting him unless we offer nathan and hutton as part of the deal>
I know a lot of people will disagree but….as a squad/impact player I would go for Kevin Davies of Bolton. He is a great target man, a real handful. Look how he changed the game at villa park at the end of last season.
As a second striker to pair with bent I would go for Steven fletcher. His goal scoring record speaks for itself. He can hold the ball up, use his head and both feet.
So is everyone suggesting Defoe forgetting how well his partnership with Bent worked out for Tottenham?
Shame we missed out on Salomon Rondon to Rubin Kazan, I would of liked him.
Also wouldn’t mind any of; Yaya Sanogo from Auxere, Emenieke or Welliton from Spartak Moscow or Abel Hernandez from Palermo. All Could be decent.
