What are your expectations for Ashley Westwood?
Of all the signings of the Lambert era to date, I must admit that Ashley Westwood is perhaps the one that has me most intrigued. To be fair I knew little about any of his signings, given they were hardly household names, and while it’s all quite exciting, there is also the unknown factor.
Westwood seems to be quite highly rated, and given the Crewe factor there has also been numerous mentions, whether fairly or not to David Platt. Of course if he gets anywhere near that level then that can only be a good thing, but it’s not really worthwhile to keep bringing up.
If anyone has any idea of what the player is about, then please let us know. Lambert seems to rate him highly, and it will be interesting to see if he finds his way into the starting eleven sooner rather than later, or whether he’ll be more of a squad option. I think we could do with another player like Westwood in the side, maybe shepherding the back four and playing the Petrov role, keeping possession and setting us on our way. I like the fact the player himself was so keen to join us, and he seems to be really willing to make the most of his opportunity. Here is a section of a Westwood feature in the Birmingham Mail:
“It was mid-afternoon when I had a call from my agent who said Villa want to do something,”
“I said ‘Yes, I’ll do it, straight away, whatever the deal is, I’ll go there’.
“So I rushed down here, passed the medical and signed on the dotted line.
“I had a few clubs interested and a couple of bids went in, but nothing really came of it. I was waiting for a phonecall on Friday to head down to this other club, but they were stalling a bit and Villa jumped in.”
It appears that Swansea were quite heavily linked, and given their success in recruiting players hopefully that’s a good sign! He featured in the under 21 game in the week, and AVFC website man Dan Harrison offered his views on the players, and again it seems quite encouraging:
‘Westwood – accomplished in possession, didn’t give it away once.Talked fellow midfielders through the game too which is a good quality’
‘He may only be 22 but has played lots of first team games and looks a really mature footballer.’
I really think he could turn out to be a terrific bit of business for us, based on early signs. As mentioned above he’s played a lot of football for someone his age, and to be named captain so young is certainly a positive, for we could do with as many leaders on the pitch as possible.
So what are your expectations for the player? Do you expect him to force his way into the side, or see him more as a work in progress? And as mentioned if anyone can offer more information on what the player is all about, feel free to do so!

Aston Villa News 24/7
I think he’ll quickly get into the 1st team alongside KEH, Holman and Bannan. Westwood fits in as Lambert seems to demand the midfield players to pass and move whilst closing down and hounding the opposition when not in possession. He is what the cliche would say a “typical Lambert signing”. Looking forward to his debut.
I tink he will get in the 1st team sooner than we think he is highly rated by a lot of people, he will probably take Delphs place who has been playing a little deeper which i don’t think he is completely comfortable with yet and westwood is more natural in that position i would like to see a team like
—————–guzan———————-
Lowton—-vlar———–Clark—-Bennett
—————-westwood——————
—–N’Zogbia—————– KEA————-
—————–Ireland——————
———-benteke——bent———–
I think that very soon (maybe even the Swansea game)that he will be the man alongside KEA. Looks a good prospect.
I think the set-up might just be:
Guzan
Lowton Vlarr Clark Bennett
Holman KEH Westwood
Gabby Benteke
Bent
I seem to recall Curtis Davies was a young captain too. Here’s hoping Westwood is a lot better quality than the pub player.
First and foremost as a fan of Crewe let me say I’m gutted to lose Westie !
That aside let me tell you Villans what your £2m (well near enough) has got you !
1… An astute passer of the ball ! The lad can pick a pass – be it a 5 or 50 yard pass it invariably goes to a team mate.
2… A future leader. Although he was only recently made captain at Crewe, Westwoods a natural at leading his team mates. You’ll see him constantly nattering & cajoling the players around him.
3… I’ve read your manager isn’t to shy to change formations depending on the state of play during a game & again this is where Westwood will shine ! He’s very very adept in a number of positions & is an excellent Centre Half when required.
4… At 5ft 7″ you might be thinking he’d give the physical stuff a swerve but let me tell you I’ve never seen him shirk a tackle yet. He can be ferocious in a 50/50 & doesn’t know when he’s beaten.
I’ll finish off by saying that i truly expect him to gain imtermational honours – and be on the plane in 2 years time to Brazil. I think Villans you’ll soon see that you’ve got the bargain of the year.
That’s how highly rated he is by us Alex fans.
Cheers for that mate. Always nice to hear from fans of the players previous club, and your glowing reference is also most welcome!
Sounds ideal for us, and I really think he’ll come in and do a good job. As I said he’s perhaps the player I’m most intrigued/excited about. Looking forward to seeing what he’s all about now!
Thanks again. UTV.
I am a villa fan (24 years season ticket holder) and also a massive Alex fan as I was born there. So from my point of view I loved this signing.
Agree with the fan above he has all the traits to become a quality footballer.
The main things from watching westy is that his passing and workrate is top class.
I thought at wembley last year he hardly put a foot wrong and was only over shadowed by powells amazing goal.
All we need at villa now is max clayton
If it is true that we only went for Westwood because we couldn’t get Stevens then it could be really good fortune. As soon I read the little info that is available on him as well as hearing what the Crewe fans said about him, I just had that gut feeling that he will be a success.
